God’s Well-Placed, Readable Signs

We are now enter in the season of  Advent/Christmas/Epiphany. I’ll get to that in a moment. But first let me tell you about one of my complaints I’ve had for years, related to driving my car. Specifically, it’s the lack of well-placed, readable directional signs  along  roads where people like me, who are unfamiliar with the area might logically expect  to find such signs.

For example, I’ll be driving along some unfamilar road, which has the right signs in the right places to direct me toward my destination. But suddenly I come to a “T” intersection, where there should be a sign to tell me where I will end up if I turn right and where I will end up if I turn left. But there is no sign. So then I am left with having to waste a lot of time using the trial and error method of finding my destination. Of course, I could always stop at a gas station for directions. But sometimes the person I ask, ends up giving me the wrong directions. Then there are places where the signs are there, but they are so small, covered with the foliage of a nearby bush,or just so poorly located that I can’t read them in time to make the turn.

Now you might suggest  that I get a GPS unit. And I do have one. It is certainly a big improvement  over pre-GPS times. However, there was a time when I followed the GPS directions and it led me into and all around a huge mall parking lot, until I found myself right back where I started. Also, only a few weeks ago I was following my daughter’s car to get to an event, when we came to an intersection where the GPS unit said to turn right and go south, but my daughter turned left and went north. Fortunately, my daughter new exactly where she was going so I followed her lead and turned left. All was well.

So what does this have to do with the Advent/Christmas/Epiphany season? Just this. I believe that this season serves as one of a number of well-placed, readable signs telling us that Jesus has come. Jesus is with us. Jesus will come again. In one way or another, for over 2,000 years, God has given human beings these signs. God has been giving us these signs in ways that enable us to have ample time to prepare for the turns we all need to make in our lives. Depending on where we are in our lives, the turns we need to make might be a U-turn, or just a turn of some degree in one direction or another, but always away from our own self-centered ways and back toward God and God’s ways, as taught and lived by Jesus, whose birth we celebrate during this season. The one thing God will not do is give us directions which result in our going around in circles.

More than giving us signs, God will also help us complete the turns we need to make. The help comes in the form of God’s grace, given to us by the Holy Spirit. All we have to do is be open to receiving God’s directions, wait and pray to be filled with the Holy Spirit, follow God’s directions, and let God do the rest. Then we will be moving in the direction God wants us to move for our own eternal well-being.

Grace and peace, Ray
